“Yesterday Gualtieri made a clear political choice: he handed over the housing units of the former Dogana on via del Porto Fluviale to the former occupants, effectively turning them into tenants and assignees of completely renovated and brand new apartments. All this after using public Pnrr resources for the redevelopment of the building”: the complaint about the latest move by the mayor of Rome, the Democrat Roberto Gualtieri, comes from the Brothers of Italy councilor in the Capital, Federico Rocca.
“This is not simply an administrative choice – Rocca added -. It is a political choice and we radically contest it. Because while the former occupants receive new homes, thousands of citizens who have followed the rules have been waiting for years for housing and many assignees of municipal houses are forced to live among mold, falling ceilings, broken bathrooms, and flooded basements. The message from the Gualtieri administration is devastating: in Rome it seems to become more convenient to occupy a house than to follow the rules to obtain one”.

The Meloni councilor then directly addressed Gualtieri: “Is this the housing model you want to leave as a legacy to Rome? Because if an occupation prolonged for years ends with the delivery of a renovated public house, then the violation of the rules risks no longer being a problem to solve, but a shortcut to reward. There is also a political element that we can no longer ignore. The movements for the right to housing that have made the occupation of buildings a political practice belong to a world that for years has dialogued and maintained an evident closeness with the political area of the Roman center-left. Today we see those same realities benefiting from administrative choices that, in our opinion, risk legitimizing precisely that practice”.
Rocca, therefore, recalled that this is by no means an isolated case: “First the former Dogana, then the purchase of the building on via Bibulo for 22 million euros, with the occupants remaining, and now the concrete risk that the same scheme will be replicated with Spin Time. It is a political line that, if confirmed, will see us firmly opposed. The question is simple: how much more must this model cost the citizens of Rome? Because while Gualtieri finds resources to consolidate these situations, in the real public housing there is a lack of maintenance, safety, and housing dignity”.
“At this point – Rocca added – I make an appeal to the citizens who respect the rules, to those who have been on the waiting list for years, and to those living in municipal housing in unworthy conditions: we can no longer stand by and watch. And I also make an appeal to the press: tell this disparity. Tell who the new houses are handed over to and in what conditions many regular assignees live instead. Gualtieri must know that Rome is not the property of his majority and that public money is not his money”. And finally, the promise: “We will continue to oppose this policy with every democratic, political, and institutional tool. Because one thing must be clear: the right to housing must be guaranteed to those in need, but it cannot be turned into a reward for those who have occupied illegally. If this is the Gualtieri model then we say one very simple thing to the citizens of Rome: the time has come to serve the political eviction to this administration”.
