The note from the M5S delegation to the European Parliament is limited to blaming Ursula von der Leyen. According to the Five Star MEPs, it is her fault if the AfD advances in Germany: “The rearmament policies, the only real programmatic objective of the Commission, are suicide.” Because the consequences of the arms race are “starvation wages, widespread precariousness, unsustainable cost of living, skyrocketing bills, deindustrialization.” So far, nothing new: it has been the Movement’s main argument since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. Moreover, openly contested, and this is significant, by Filippo Sensi, a reformist area Democratic senator: “Butter and guns is a false alternative. Deceptive. And the arguments used by the M5S are, unfortunately, also used by some of ours. If we think of hiding behind slogans, we are wrong. If to explain why people vote AfD we respond that it is because of rearmament, it means we have understood nothing.” The novelty, if anything, is that for the political leader of the former grillini, Giuseppe Conte, the political earthquake in eastern Germany is also Giorgia Meloni’s fault. For the Italian prime minister, the M5S leader hypothesizes the accusation of complicity: “She has signed, she has indirectly contributed to all this by signing a European rearmament plan.” So now the European Union faces the prospect “of a military superpower with arsenals full of weapons and an AfD that claims the government of the country.”
THE REARMAMENT ISSUE
A somewhat convoluted reasoning, given that more or less at the same time one of the leaders of the German formation, Tino Chrupalla, was attacking Berlin’s support for Ukraine, which is the other side of the coin of the European rearmament program: “People are fed up. They see that we are transferring billions of our tax money to Ukraine. In fact, sending tax revenue abroad instead of using it for our population.” Similar words, if you look closely, to those used by the M5S on Kiev. A symptom of the short circuit triggered in the “broad field” by the German vote. Where everyone has their diagnosis for the AfD’s advance. Take Sandro Ruotolo, PD MEP, therefore from the group of Socialists and Democrats who support Commission President von der Leyen: “We must understand why the far right is growing.” He understood it: it is the fault of the European center-right. Because you cannot “stop the far right by chasing it on the ground of immigration, rights, and minorities. When the democratic right copies the far right, it does not weaken it: it legitimizes it. And Italy is not immune.” And the responsibilities of the left wing of the “Ursula majority,” as the M5S instead denounces? Omitted.

Instead, for Chiara Braga, PD group leader in the Chamber, Conte is right: “That vote is regional, but it has a huge impact on the direction Germany is taking. Think about immigration management. Regarding the risk of deindustrialization, the idea was that the way could be investments in rearmament. The AfD result says that this path does not work.”
