Di Battista, 48 years old, was on the island to carry out some reports when he experienced a severe headache. After an initial hospitalization in Santa Clara, he was transferred to Havana, where medical examinations continued.
He was also followed by two Italian specialists from the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, a neurosurgeon and a doctor expert in resuscitation and intensive care, who arrived in Cuba on the initiative of the leader of the Five Star Movement Giuseppe Conte. Di Battista’s partner, Sahra Lahouasnia, is also present at the Havana hospital.
In recent days, the former deputy himself had reassured, at least in part, about his condition. “Today I feel better,” he had written on social media. Then he added: “These have been difficult days and at the same time I am optimistic and always try to see the positive in everything. I thank the Cuban doctors who, as confirmed to me by the Italian doctors, were very good and timely in diagnosis and in choosing the initial treatments. I will leave Cuba on September 4 with an air ambulance whose costs will be covered by the insurance company with which I took out a policy before departure”.
