Adriano Stabile had a close call. The 38-year-old provincial secretary of the Democratic Party of Mantua was injured while in Odessa, Ukraine. Stabile was in a taxi around 11 p.m. on Friday when he was narrowly missed by a Russian drone that fell nearby. “I was lucky: I was fortunate,” he admitted before recounting the details of the incident. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which skidded and was involved in an accident in which the Democratic secretary was injured. On Sunday, Stabile will return home to Castiglione delle Stiviere. He had left for Ukraine as a volunteer of the European Movement for Nonviolent Action.

“I was in a taxi,” Stabile explained as reported by Corriere della Sera, “and I was heading towards the Arcadia district and its beach. It is an area about twenty kilometers from the port of Odessa and is relatively quiet: more than Arcadia, in fact, the Russian army targets the port, with the various traffics that take place there. But while we were proceeding, a drone suddenly fell a short distance from the taxi I was in. The driver lost control and skidded, and we were involved in an accident. I also fainted and fortunately was brought back to my accommodation by the Ukrainian police. There were no deaths or serious injuries. Now I am returning to Castiglione.” During the incident, Stabile suffered some trauma and facial injuries. “I think I also dislocated my jaw: it hurts quite a bit and I have difficulty speaking.”
Immediate solidarity was expressed by the Radicals of Mantua: “To Adriano,” reads a note signed by provincial secretary Francesco Liotta Violi, “we share unequivocal support for the Ukrainian civil and military resistance and solidarity with a people attacked, who for years have defended their freedom and independence from the criminal invasion ordered by Putin’s regime. To Adriano, to the other people involved in the attack, and to all the volunteers who continue to operate in Ukraine goes our full solidarity and closeness, along with wishes for a speedy recovery.”
