Elly Schlein will not be there (she has never participated either as secretary or before becoming one), but neither will Giuseppe Conte (who was instead at the 2021 edition, as president of the M5S, having left Palazzo Chigi six months earlier).
The government fills the gap. Giorgia Meloni will not be there, but the two deputy prime ministers, Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini, will be present, along with 13 other government representatives: Andrea Abodi (Minister for Sport and Youth), Anna Maria Bernini (University and Research), Maria Elvira Calderone (Labour and Social Policies), Giancarlo Giorgetti (Economy and Finance), Alessandro Giuli (Culture), Alessandra Locatelli (Disability), Francesco Lollobrigida (Agriculture), Matteo Piantedosi (Interior), Gilberto Pichetto Fratin (Environment), Nello Musumeci (Civil Protection), Adolfo Urso (Enterprises and Made in Italy), Giuseppe Valditara (Education and Merit), Paolo Zangrillo (Public Administration).
The delegation of deputy ministers and undersecretaries will also be well represented, with Lucia Albano, Undersecretary of the Economy, Francesco Paolo Sisto, Deputy Minister of Justice, Maria Teresa Bellucci, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Policies, and Claudio Durigon, Undersecretary of Labour.
No surprise, since the Meeting for Friendship among Peoples has always sought dialogue with those who currently govern when planning the most political debates. In Italy, but also in Europe. Not by chance, this year there is also a presence at the highest levels of representatives of European institutions: from Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, to Raffaele Fitto, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, up to Pina Picierno, Vice President of the European Parliament, recently founder of a new centrist group, Spazio Pubblico.
But the Rimini Meeting, an event born from the experience of the Communion and Liberation world, although autonomous in its organization, is also a test to understand, beyond institutional references, who this important part of the Catholic world looks to. And the absence of the main opposition leaders (not only Schlein and Conte, but also Angelo Bonelli, Nicola Fratoianni, and Matteo Renzi) is a fact that makes one reflect and revives the theme of the presence of Catholics in the center-left. There are, however, representatives of the reformist and centrist area of the PD. For the PD there will be Stefano Bonaccini, now a regular presence at the Meeting, as well as the MEP Giorgio Gori and Senator Simona Malpezzi (reformist democrats).
Of course, Michele De Pascale, governor of Emilia Romagna (also PD, reformist area), will not be missing. From Italia Viva there will be Maria Elena Boschi, Enrico Borghi, and Maria Chiara Gadda, while Matteo Richetti will come for Azione. From the M5S, only Stefano Patuanelli will be present, who will participate in a debate on institutional reforms with Tommaso Foti, Fdi, and Massimiliano Romeo, Lega.
Yesterday, on the opening day of the event, another name arrived in Rimini who has been much talked about this summer dominated by the Ranucci-Lavitola affair in the broad field chat: Roberto Gualtieri, mayor of Rome. He participated in a debate on cities, with Gaetano Manfredi, mayor of Naples. Both are possible cards, currently covered, that could be played in case of a stalemate between Schlein and Conte. And perhaps it is no coincidence that they are at the Meeting.
