The spotlight on the former 1987 Italian champion was reignited by eco-activist Alessandro Cannavacciuolo with a raw post on Facebook. The photo of Puzone, asleep on a bench in Acerra and visibly unkempt, accompanied by strong words. The man had wounds on his arms and legs and only the timely intervention of the emergency services, activated by the mayor D’Errico and social workers, prevented dramatic consequences.
“He is currently hospitalized at Clinica Villa dei Fiori for the necessary treatments and examinations – said Cannavacciuolo – the situation was really serious. For days he was lying on a bench under the scorching sun, continuing to drink. I don’t know how much longer he would have lasted. Meanwhile, we have also started the legal and social-health process to ensure Pietro a certain recovery path”.

Prodigy boy of the Azzurri youth teams, early debut in Serie A in 1982, then a talent literally thrown away. For the right winger born in 1963 only 9 appearances with the great Napoli, very few for what seemed a predestined. “I didn’t know how to manage my talent, I lost all the opportunities. I was always out at night with Diego,” Puzone explained some time ago to Gazzetta dello Sport, who also played with Catania, Spezia and Ischia during his career. “Life has presented me the bill. I spent years beyond the limit. Excessive popularity, easy earnings, vices. Diego and I used to go around clubs, we had fun. With him you knew what time you went out, but not when you came home”.
“Before we parted, Diego told me a phrase I think about every moment: ‘Pietro, you have to save yourself‘. If I am here now it is also thanks to him,” he said after yet another attempt to recover a normal life. The game is getting tougher, but it’s not over yet.
