“Never hit someone when they are down“. Just a few words from Simona Halep, in a story posted on Instagram, to reignite the controversy with Nick Kyrgios, precisely on the day, Wednesday, when the Australian tennis player is dealing with an anti-doping case after testing positive for cocaine in a test conducted before the ATP Mallorca. A message posted by the Romanian in an Instagram story that does not directly mention Kyrgios, but seems to have a very clear recipient: “Life has a strange way of swapping positions — it reads further — And an even stranger way of revealing the difference between an accident and a choice“.

Words that bring back an old story, because the former world number one had been repeatedly brought up by Kyrgios when the Australian commented on doping cases in tennis. Halep had tested positive for Roxadustat at the 2022 US Open. A case that initially cost her a four-year suspension, later reduced by the CAS to nine months in 2024. The Romanian has always maintained her innocence regarding voluntary intake of the substance and her battle to prove her version of events dragged on for months.

However, Kyrgios had also used Halep’s case to support his very harsh positions towards tennis players involved in doping cases. The same attitude that, during the Clostebol case, he reserved for Jannik Sinner, becoming one of his fiercest critics. The Australian repeatedly attacked the Italian number one after the positive Clostebol test emerged in 2024 and the subsequent suspension agreed with WADA in 2025.

Now, however, the situation has reversed. Kyrgios has been suspended by ITIA after testing positive for cocaine and has admitted the incident, explaining that he went through a particularly difficult period, with physical and personal problems. And it is precisely here that Halep’s words take on a particular weight. “Never hit someone when they are down,” wrote the Romanian, before adding the phrase about the difference between “an accident and a choice.” A message that does not contain direct accusations, but comes after years in which Kyrgios has expressed very sharp judgments on others’ anti-doping cases. And which, inevitably, made people think of the Australian tennis player just as he faces one of the most delicate situations of his career.
