Varenne has died. The Italian horse, born in Copparo in 1995, was a great trotter, considered by many the strongest of all time. The “Captain,” one of his nicknames, won many titles during his career, notably achieving the Grand Slam twice, in 2001 and 2002, winning the three most prestigious Group 1 races in Europe, namely the Prix d’Amerique, the Gran Premio Lotteria, and the Elitloppet.
“It is with immense sorrow – reads the official Instagram page of Varenne – that we announce the death of the Captain, last night Varenne passed away and the veterinarian confirmed the cause as a massive heart attack. We are devastated to have learned this news this morning and we want to remember him together with all his fans flying towards his victories. Today Varenne has put on those wings to travel elsewhere, always run free and always our Captain, may the earth be gentle to you.”
“Reach Enzo up there,” the Instagram page continues. Varenne’s staff refers to Enzo Giordano, who was the buyer and owner of the horse, purchased for about 180 million lire.

Varenne was the son of the American stallion Waikiki Beach and the Italian mare Ialmaz. During his career, he earned Giordano over six million euros, triumphing in 62 of the 73 races he competed in. After his racing career, the “Captain” was a stallion for years and sired more than 2,000 offspring.
