In the already troubled summer of the League, the only thing missing was the “leak” of messages from the Federal Council chat. And here it is. The trigger was the interview with Corsera by the Lombardy governor Attilio Fontana, who, in addition to asking to “review the party’s approach in a sustainable and effective way,” when specifically asked about Matteo Salvini’s role, replied: “No solution should be excluded.” A phrase that more than any other shook the Carroccio internally. First, however, we need to try to understand how things really stand. The tension is very high, but despite this, there is an attempt to work on an agreement that can resolve the crisis. Only it must be done quickly. On September 20 there is Pontida and no one (neither the Salvini supporters nor his current critics) has ever been able to govern the field that was, is, and will be that of the “unknown militant.”
The one who wakes up early on Sunday to go to the square to set up and guard the gazebo; the one who doesn’t care about internal quarrels but gets angry if the movement pays the price—in terms of consensus and credibility. And who does not hesitate to express dissent once they set foot on the “sacred ground.”

THE SITUATION
As far as we know, on the negotiation table there is not Salvini’s role as secretary—which, despite Fontana’s words, would not be in question—but the idea of a more collective management of the movement. No longer the lone man in command, but a team that can help the leader steer the League out of the deadlock it has gotten into and struggles to get out of. A solution that had already been proposed to Salvini a couple of months ago but, after an initial opening, had failed.
Will the proposal be accepted this time? Hard to say.
At the Versiliana, Salvini used words that are hard to interpret: “The League is here,” as if to say, it’s me. Period. Those closest to him have been repeating the congress mantra for days: “He was unanimously elected just a year ago, he must be allowed to work.” But the escalation of heavyweight figures inviting him to reconsider his position might not leave indifferent the man who—factually—deserves credit for having taken the League out of political anonymity and put it back at the center of the scene, with percentages never seen before in via Bellerio and (perhaps) never even imagined.
Two dates might help us understand more. The first is in two days, Thursday, August 20, when two heavyweights will take the stage at the Versiliana: the Senate group leader Massimiliano Romeo and the Lombardy governor Attilio Fontana.
From the tone they use, it will begin to be clear whether the negotiations continue or not. The second is September 8 and 9, when the event “In your defense. On the side of Italians. Every day” will be held in Rome. Which could hide an attempt to make the Northern League talk with that of the Center-South, after the frictions of the last federal meeting. Then there will be Pontida…
Let’s rewind and return to Fontana’s words: “No solution should be excluded a priori.” It is here that the charge of Salvini supporters clogged the chat that includes all members of the party’s highest decision-making body: the Federal Council. The head of delegation to the European Parliament Paolo Borchia writes: “None of us is happy with the numbers, but all the blame cannot be put on Salvini”; the deputy Igor Iezzi, instead, comments: “Salvini was reconfirmed as secretary a year ago, if they wanted to say something they could have done it. This debate is disrespectful to the militants who voted for him.”

CONCRETE PROPOSALS
Then there are Salvini’s two deputies who try the difficult path of construction. Claudio Durigon (who will be among the “mediators” at the beginning of September) puts it bluntly: “Is a relaunch needed? Is there a need to give energy and vitality? I can agree, but to think that it comes from a different organizational hypothesis of the party, I find it only a mere personal guarantee objective, perhaps to get to Rome… So much maligned, but so much sought after.”
The former unionist goes even further: “Let’s talk about issues. Do we want to build a strong narrative worthy of the history of our movement? Then a budget is needed that meets the needs of citizens and not in favor of Europeanist rules that have stiffened everything and weakened the productive classes, dear to us and to be defended.”
Silvia Sardone concludes: “When an article about our party comes out that doesn’t talk about internal quarrels, let me know. And then we complain if consensus drops…” Words that were somewhat hastily interpreted as an attack on Fontana, but which actually sound more like a warning to the entire League troop: votes are won on the ground. Not with party quarrels. And indeed, today Sardone will already be a protagonist with colleagues Cisint and Ceccardi—at Bagno Neda in Fiumaretta di Ameglia (La Spezia) with the event “Neither veil, nor gag.” With a clear reference to the battles against Islamization.
