Benedetta Pilato won the silver medal in the 50 breaststroke at the European Swimming Championships. The Italian, who was among the favorites, was preceded by a hundredth of a second by the Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte who finished in 29″93. Bronze went to the Irish Mona McSharry (29″95). “This hundredth haunts me. I am still happy, three times under 30″ even if just barely is important. Surely it is the beginning of a journey, obviously I would have liked to win but it’s fine like this. I think it is a starting point, I changed everything this year and it’s fine like this,” commented the Italian after the race.
Alberto Razzetti instead remains off the podium in the 200 individual medley. The Italian finished 1’56″60, just shy of his personal best. Gold went to Hungarian Huberto Kos in 1″5424, silver to Spaniard Hugo Gonzalez de Oliveira (1’54″44), bronze to Russian Mikhail Shcherbakov (1’56″16). Meanwhile, Paola Borrelli placed sixth in the 200 butterfly final. Gold went to British Keanna Macinnes in 2’05″90, ahead of Dane Helena Bach (2’06″14) and Spaniard Laura Cabanes Garzas (2’07″21). The Italian finished with 2’08″23.
