In Italy the middle class is treated like an ATM to cover the follies of public spending. Between usurious rates and twelve hidden and overt wealth taxes that drain about fifty billion from private individuals, the situation for the middle class is at the limit of bearability, moreover without receiving services commensurate with the cost in return. The left tells us the story that tax increases are meant to hit the super-rich and redistribute wealth: it is a colossal lie, the real rich, those with large capitals, simply move the money where the tax system is more convenient and in the end the country becomes overall poorer.

It cannot be that the middle class always pays the highest proportional price: the professional, the small merchant or entrepreneur and their families. In Italy there are a ton of taxes that drain savings and hit those who have earned their home by working, yet there are those who, driven by an ideological fury that hates merit and private savings, continue to oppose giving these categories of taxpayers some breathing room. A modern country should instead courageously cut taxes on the middle class; if we continue to squeeze those who produce, there will be no recovery that holds. Any other recipe has proven to be a failure, as Margaret Thatcher said, «the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money».
