The municipality seems to have realized the embarrassment. “The mats are certainly not the definitive solution,” admits the Welfare assessor Michelangelo Cavone in response to criticism, “but they help us get closer to these people and have daily contact since many suffer from serious addictions or psychiatric problems and therefore refuse any kind of hospitality.” One should rather question whether better coordination with associations specialized in supporting these people, who have been operating in assistance and volunteering for years, is needed. Perhaps instead of racking their brains to design a foldable bed, they should consult those who offer assistance on the street night after night.
