The words coming from Italy have sparked a storm in Spain. The hypothesis put forward by Gianni Daniele, president of the medical commission of Federtennis, about the condition of Carlos Alcaraz is causing debate. In commenting on the long break of the Spaniard, the official also spoke of a possible form of depression linked to the difficulty in fully recovering from the wrist injury. A personal hypothesis, not supported by diagnosis or official communications, which has provoked a strong reaction from the Iberian press. To Repubblica, Daniele explained: “From Spain, it was not clear what kind of injury Carlos had to his wrist. Now a hypothesis of mental weakness is emerging: struggling to regain the intensity of work he had before, in his mind a form of depression would have formed, a vicious circle that does not give him the confidence he had before.” And again: “Doubts would begin to take over in his mind.”

These words immediately found space in the main Spanish sports newspapers. Marca defined Daniele’s statement as “a bold opinion“, highlighting the lack of concrete elements supporting the theory. AS spoke instead of “controversial statements”, while Mundo Deportivo accused the Italian official of expressing “an opinion without evidence about the injury.” Even harsher was Sport, which included the matter in an alleged critical attitude of the Italian press towards the Murcian, also recalling recent statements by Gabriele Gravina: “Unlike Alcaraz, Jannik would never buy a six-million-euro yacht. I am convinced of this and I doubt that anyone can prove me otherwise.”

The central point remains the uncertainty about Alcaraz’s condition. The wrist problem has not been publicly explained in detail and the return has been postponed several times. The world number two has shown on social media the work done during rehabilitation, including exercises with the left hand, modified rackets, and progressive signs of recovery. At the moment, therefore, linking the stop to an alleged depression remains mere speculation. The priority will be to understand when Alcaraz can truly return to competitiveness, with the US Open approaching and the dream of seeing the duel with Jannik Sinner again in the United States.
