A year, just under, and Italy will be called to vote again. The Italian political landscape is painted by Paolo Mieli from the pages of Corriere della Sera and, while on one side there is still a strong majority, on the other there is an opposition that risks remaining a victim of its own divisions.
The Democratic Party, according to Mieli, is still engaged in defining the program and building the coalition ahead of the next general elections. And precisely the position on foreign policy and European rearmament risks becoming one of the main elements of internal conflict. Giuseppe Conte, in fact, has relaunched his line on the war in Ukraine, intervening in Asiago after the previous appearance in Naples in the presence of Elly Schlein. The leader of the M5s announced that, if he became Prime Minister leading the coalition, Italy would stop sending weapons to Kiev. The priority would be to favor a direct negotiation between the conflicting parties. Now, given the divergence of views with the PD, according to Mieli holding the primaries is a double-edged sword: “As paradoxical as it may seem, it is the task of the Democratic Party leadership to help Conte solve his problems. If they leave him with the only way to remain in the primary arena to fight alone against Schlein and various extras, they could receive bitter surprises from that gladiator. Better to give up the arena,” whispers Mieli.

There is no strong candidate who just needs to be formalized and Conte, compared to Schlein, will have to radicalize his position. If the PD leader wins, of course, he will adapt, but he could lose electoral support from the loyal Five Star members. And the same applies to Schlein. Not to mention that the entry of other contenders, even if minor, can only make things worse. The primaries for the so-called “broad field,” for Paolo Mieli, are in short a trap that can only bring trouble: “Given how the debate has developed, it is the very idea of holding primaries that seems to need rethinking.” On the contrary, in the center-right Giorgia Meloni still has a dominant position, although there are disagreements between Lega and FI and the wild card Vannacci. Therefore, it will have to be the PD to extend a hand to the M5S rather than clash in the primary arena, where only blood can come out. The possible direct confrontation between Conte and Schlein could accentuate the differences already emerged in recent months, forcing both to strengthen their respective positions to win voters’ support. A dynamic that, according to Mieli’s analysis in Corriere, could create tensions both within the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party, with the risk of alienating parts of their respective bases.
