“The alliance yes, stubbornly, but not at any cost”: Giorgio Gori of the Pd responds harshly to the latest statement by the leader of the Five Star Movement Giuseppe Conte. The latter, turning the primaries into a sort of referendum between pacifism, which would be represented by him, and “warmongering,” which would instead be represented by Elly Schlein, not only clarified that he will no longer vote for arms shipments to Ukraine, but also stated that the foreign policy issue “we will resolve with the primaries. We will let the Italians decide.” Therefore, if he wins, he specified, “the day after I will fight in Europe to find a negotiated solution,” thus implying that in case of the opponent’s victory, no negotiated solution will be sought.

If some among the Democrats chose to respond diplomatically, the MEP Gori was more blunt, according to whom “support for Ukraine and Europe’s security are non-negotiable. Whoever speaks today like Vannacci, and pulls the rope, should take note.” Similar reactions came from other Democratic “reformists.” Lia Quartapelle, for example, wrote: “Good. It should be acknowledged that there are those who want to break the coalition.” Along the same lines Filippo Sensi, who called Conte “the Vannacci of the broad field” who “fidgets, promising a pro-Russian agenda and playing at wrecking. He will not succeed. He will have to give up.”

Attacking the Democratic leader is Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani: “The deafening silence of Elly Schlein in the face of Giuseppe Conte’s pro-Russian statements is worrying. The Italian left should tell us if it stands with the Ukrainian people or with Putin. If it stands with democracy or with dictatorships. If it wants the Russians to continue hammering houses, hospitals, and UNESCO heritage cities or wants to prevent the launch of ballistic missiles that can also reach our capitals. If it believes in freedom or not. If it stands with Europe or against Europe.”
