Not even Vannacci.” The words of the Democratic Party senator Filippo Sensi are the first, very harsh comment on the interview of Angelo Bonelli in Il Foglio in which the deputy of Alliance Greens and Left openly sides with Giuseppe Conte.

 The leader of the 5 Stars, Bonelli assures, “was prime minister, has a sense of state and knows that when governing a country you have to defend it, including cyber attacks and conditioning. If we were in government, we would be the first to defend the interests of the State against threats coming from Putin, just as we would against the conditioning of the American Maga platforms.” A nice endorsement, no doubt about it.

“No more weapons to Ukraine,” says the red-green leader again, without hesitation, embracing a cause that creates quite a few embarrassments for the Nazareno. The Democratic secretary Elly Schlein, on the subject, has always been rather vague, elusive, at times cryptic, divided between a more pro-European and pro-Ukraine sentiment (interpreted by the Democratic reformists) and a decidedly more critical, if not outright pro-Russian, gut feeling. Support for Kiev from an electoral point of view pays little and could pay even less ahead of the political elections. This explains Elly’s escape strategy, which led to the break with Pina Picierno, vice president of the European Parliament who fled from Carlo Calenda. That Bonelli now also accelerates against weapons to Zelensky could represent a big problem for the PD, dragging the Broad Field towards increasingly maximalist drifts. 

“Europe must build its own foreign policy and common defense, but the arms race is madness – Bonelli stigmatizes on Il Foglio -. We cannot continue to fuel a spiral that takes resources away from health, school, research and the fight against the climate crisis. Italy is already one of the main military powers and Europe spends more than China and Russia: the problem is not buying more weapons, but coordinating what already exists and strengthening international law.”

Pacifist or populist? “After more than four years of war, continuing to rely exclusively on the military solution will not lead to Ukraine’s victory – recalls the ally of Nicola Fratoianni -. The country’s priorities are different: wages, public health, school, research, ecological transition and energy security.” 

After reiterating agreement with Conte on the fact that at the moment there is no “Russian threat” (he had already said this also to Il Foglio no more than a couple of weeks ago), the green Angelo creates another big headache for Schlein: “The program comes before the leader,” he emphasizes, while the primaries “are not the right way” to identify the center-left candidate, reiterating the need to build a clear pact with Italians on the contents. And it is precisely on the contents that Schlein will have to reckon with the red wing of the coalition. The secretary may also find an agreement, moving further to the left. But what will the Democratic voters who still delude themselves into voting for a moderate and internationally reliable party do?
