What happened in Berlin should not be subject to ideological distinctions. Because violence has no color, let alone pain. Yet there are those who, even today, cannot throw their heart over the obstacle, remaining entrenched in their positions, as a certain left stubbornly does. In the center-right, however, the ideas seem clear. “Italy expresses solidarity with Germany,” as the prime minister, Giorgia Meloni writes on X, and “condemns and strongly opposes any form of hatred and extremism, working at every level to defend the freedom and security of our citizens. The Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, expresses closeness to his German colleague Johann Wadephul “for the serious attack” and “to the victims and their families.”
For the other deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, “Islamic fanaticism is the problem, in Italy and in Europe. Stop any concession of space to Islamic realities until there is a written agreement with the Italian state, as has long been the case for many other religious confessions.” From the center-left, instead, the strong voices of the camp are noticeably absent. For the MEP and Rights officer in the PD secretariat, Alessandro Zan, what happened in Berlin “is a tragedy that wounds the whole of Europe and demands a clear response against every form of hatred. It is not just a criminal act, but an attack on the fundamental rights of all. Chancellor Merz called it an attack on the whole society.”
But alongside solidarity, controversy is not lacking. “If she really believes it, let actions follow words: the president of the Bundestag Julia Klöckner should immediately raise the rainbow flag on the German Parliament, after having denied its display on May 17, the International Day Against Homolesbotransphobia.”
