The passage destined to make the most noise concerns the Quirinale. He says he doesn’t feel suited for the Presidency of the Republic. «It’s a somewhat rigid, somewhat closed role», he observes with the smile of someone who knows perfectly well how much such a phrase will spark debate. Then he surprises everyone by indicating his ideal candidate for the future: Giorgia Meloni. Not immediately, he clarifies, but at the next opportunity. «It would be a great fortune for Italy», he declares, defining his statement as both a wish and a recognition of the Prime Minister’s abilities. And he immediately prefaces it: «There is no reason for this to sound like an alarm».
When the discussion shifts to Milan, the President of the Senate changes register but not tone. Five years ago, he recalls, the problem was finding a candidate. Today, however, there are too many names. He cites Silvia Sardone, Maurizio Lupi and the other possible protagonists in the race for Palazzo Marino. The recipe is simple: choose one, but with the loyal support of everyone.
The controversy over Pirlo? «One must distinguish between sport and politics». The chapter on Roberto Vannacci is also present, addressed with a mix of sarcasm and severity. According to La Russa, after the break with the Lega, the general often ended up voting with the left on the most important occasions. As for his willingness to rejoin the center-right «on his own terms», the President of the Senate cannot resist the joke and recalls the old catchphrase about the Liberal Party, which allegedly set being called by the left as its only condition.
The jab also comes for Forza Italia, but with the tone of someone asserting the coalition’s solidity. «I will never throw Forza Italia off the tower», he assures. Except to add, with one of his proverbial remarks: «Unless it decides to commit suicide and throws itself off». A message that leaves room for more than one interpretation.
